There are a few instances when the use of labels might cause management issues down the road:

  1. When a label is functioning as a post type.  If you have a generic post type of "Releases" and you have a label called "Press Releases," it is preferable to create a new post type called "Press Releases."  The Digital Bell is optimized to pull data by post types; if you find yourself labelling a generic post type with a specific label for a number of posts, consider creating a new post type instead.
  2. When a label is being used to feature an item.  Labels are not date specific; The Digital Bell does not remember when a post is tied to a label.  If you find yourself creating specific, over-specialized labels to feature posts on specific parts of your site in a date-ordered fashion, you should contact your support representative to seek out a more maintainable solution.  Your representative might suggest creating a new post type instead.
  3. When a label needs to be used inclusively.  If you wish to have a post list featuring posts that are labelled with one label or another label, but not necessarily both, you should consider creating a parent label for both labels you want to use inclusively.  For instance, if you want to create a post list featuring posts labelled "Goose" or "Duck," consider creating a label called "Waterfowl," with "Goose" and "Duck" as child labels.  (See below for instructions on parent-child relationships with labels.)
  4. When you have many, over-specialized labels under one label type.  It may be better to begin grouping these labels under parent labels.  For example, "Taxation and Small Businesses" and "Closing Tax Loopholes" may both be child labels of the label "Taxation."
